What strategy execution actually is

Strategy execution is the discipline of turning a chosen direction into reality. It assumes the strategy is set. The work is to translate that strategy into the objectives, behaviours, decisions, cadences and outcomes that move the organisation in the chosen direction — under pressure, across functions, without losing the thread.

OKRs are part of strategy execution. They are not the whole of it. OKRs are the instrument. The system around them — the PMO, the operating rhythms, the decision rights, the AI — is what turns that instrument into music.

The Big Idea

Strategy execution is a dual operating system

There’s the capability layer — trained champions, coached leaders, the people who can hold the practice in the room when pressure is high. And there’s the system layer — the cadences, tooling, dashboards, governance.

You need both. Treating them as a choice is one of the reasons so many programmes stall.

A beautiful capability layer atrophies the moment those people get pulled onto something else. A slick system becomes beautifully instrumented theatre that doesn’t change a single decision. The two have to be designed to reinforce each other. The capability makes the system human. The system makes the capability stick.

Strategy execution FAQs

What’s the difference between strategy execution and OKRs?
OKRs are one instrument inside strategy execution — the bit that translates strategy into measurable objectives and key results. Strategy execution is the wider discipline: the cadences, decision rights, governance, capability and AI-enabled rhythms that make OKRs actually move. Teams often start with OKRs and discover they need the system around them.
Do we need OKRs in place to work with you?
No. Some clients come to us with OKRs that are well written but not landing. Others come to us before OKRs are in place at all — with a strategy they want to execute and no operating system to do it. Both are good starting points.
How long does a typical engagement run?
A diagnostic alone runs 2–4 weeks. A full strategy execution engagement — diagnose, design, embed, sustain — typically runs 6–9 months, with embedded coaching across a couple of OKR cycles to make the practices stick. Our explicit aim is to leave when your team can run the system independently.
Do you work with PMOs specifically?
Yes. The PMO is, in our view, the natural owner of the strategy execution operating system. A lot of our work is partnering with PMOs to upgrade the practice they already run — from status theatre to a portfolio function that influences outcomes.
How does AI fit in?
Strategy cycles are compressing and transformation is now BAU. Without help, the bandwidth isn’t there. Our Agentic AI OKR Execution Engine automates status synthesis, surfaces blockers across initiatives and tracks OKR progress against the systems of work — freeing the human conversation for the moments that need a human. We design the AI strand against the practical pains of the PMO, not as a generic “AI strategy” layer.

We’re UK-based but operate internationally. Recent engagements include work with US clients in Denver and Lone Tree, CO. We mix remote coaching with in-person workshops where it earns its place — particularly leadership alignment and operating model design.
